Diamonds Are Not Forever
The Economist report on Botswana was spot on. Botswana’s diamond deposits may run out by 2030. The country has no choice but to diversify/reform its economy by retraining its incompetent/lazy civil servants/managers to attract foreign investment. Not always easy but doable with Ian Khama's five D's: democracy, dignity, development, discipline, and delivery. I wish Ian Khama, the newly re-elected president all the best.

Benetton Case Study
Peter Gumbel's opinion piece in the Time magazine on Benetton's unique business management was brilliant and insightful.
Generational shifts in family businesses are notoriously tricky. A rule of thumb is that only 1 in 3 family firms survives the transition from the founding generation to the next, and only 1 in 10 makes the jump successfully from the second to the third generation. The more numerous and distant the cousins involved, the harder the task of keeping them all in line — although sometimes the biggest problems come from the closest relatives.

Jewelry is not a fad product. Archeologists have solid proof that it has been around for at least 50 millennia – and some would now argue that jewelry has been around for at least 100,000 years. In its earliest days, people wore jewelry to denote their social and cultural identities: wealth, power and privilege. Early jewelry also provided identification of gender, age and social class. After thousands of years, these same factors continue to drive demand for jewelry. The 2008-09 recession will not derail consumers’ cultural affinity for jewelry.

It is natural and proper to prefer a business which is large and well managed, has a good record, and is expected to show increased earnings in the future. Tomorrow is likely to tell a similar story.

The more a person knows about the value of their gold, the more likely they are to find an honest buyer and get the highest prices for their valuables. So, let's talk about gold. The higher the karat the higher the amount of gold in the jewelry. For instance, 10 karat gold contains 41.6 percent gold while 18 karat gold contains 75 percent gold. Art Market Update
The October 8th sale confirmed a trend at auctions in London, New York. Whereas the financial crisis has made mice out of collectors (especially speculative buyers) of contemporary works, such as Yue Minjun’s pink grimaces and the many-hued dollybirds by Liu Ye and Feng Zhengjie, sales of traditional Chinese arts are where the real muscle is to be found. Western auction houses say there may be as many as 100 mainland Chinese collectors who spend upwards of $1m a year buying art, and another 100 collectors in Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Subodh Gupta is indeed India’s most talked-about artist. Ginny Dougary's opinion piece in TimesOnline (October 10, 2009) was also interesting. Thanks.

I mean, we’re not in an ordinary place here, we’re in a place where there’s more money than sense. I mean these people have got so much money, they are so rich… But as long as we keep the rich happy, I’m happy. Because when they’re unhappy, the rich, they just do unpleasant things. Like wipe out the economic system. They were hunting for happiness by gambling everything. And they failed. And now, hopefully, they’re being punished. But not sufficiently.

Diamond Price Bubble
A recent report issued by RBC Capital Markets titled 'Diamonds - Where Will All the Rough Come From?' was intriguing. Expect price corrections short/long term. Another interesting fact was that about 90% of all rough diamond production comes from De Beers, Rio Tinto, Alrosa and BHP Billiton.
Finding new deposits takes years and is costly as diamonds are so scarce; for example, the Ekati mine took 10 years to find and seven years to prove and build. Even once found, it takes a long time to bring a diamond mine into production; the Star Project in Canada for instance, owned by Shore Gold, has had around $300m spent on it so far but is unlikely to start producing until 2012-2013.

The fundamental reasons why the electric car has not attained the popularity it deserves are (1) The failure of the manufacturers to properly educate the general public regarding the wonderful utility of the electric; (2) The failure of [power companies] to make it easy to own and operate the electric by an adequate distribution of charging and boosting stations. The early electrics of limited speed, range and utility produced popular impressions which still exist.
