Random Thoughts

The job of CEO's is now to regain America's trust-and for the country's sake it's important that they do so. They will not succeed in this endeavor, however, by way of fatuous ads, meaningless policy statements, structural changes of boards and committees. Instead, CEO's must embrace stewardship as a way of life and treat owners as partners, not patsies. It's time for CEO's to walk the walk.

Chaim Even Zohar Viewpoint

Chaim Even Zohar was spot on. Diamonds are easily removable and hard to recover product. Many thanks for sharing the info about Roman Rozzen from Rikko Company. Diamonds don't cheat; it's the people who cheat all the time, period.

Identity theft is a far greater problem. In the United States, the second-largest group of filings of Suspicious Activities Reports has to do with identity theft. According to research data, there were 10 million victims of identity theft in 2008 in the U.S. alone. Actually, one out of every 10 U.S. consumers has already been victimized. Some 1.6 million households have seen their bank accounts, credit or debit cards being compromised. Half of the victims discover within three months that someone else is using their name or identity. In 20 percent of the cases, the victims don’t’ learn that their identity has been stolen for four or more years – and the damage can be awesome. But the scariest part of this whole identity-theft problem, according to a 2004 study, is that “it can take up to 5,840 hours (which is the equivalent of working a full-time job for two years) to correct the damage from identity theft depending on the severity of the case. The average victim spends 330 hours repairing the damage.”

Jaume Plensa

Hilarie M. Sheets's viewpoints in ARTnews about Jaume Plensa was educational and insightful. I enjoyed it. Many thanks.

On the day of the opening, the people put on a parade, with an orchestra playing, that ended up at the head like it was a divinity. I'm from the Mediterranean and I can understand that in my culture, but I never expected that in England—or in Chicago. People get crazy. For me it's nice, because you see that humanity needs very similar things. You have to offer possibilities and then they react.

Luke Johnson Viewpoint

Luke Johnson was spot on. Experience will teach each of us when to follow our innate judgment, and when to call for more technical back-up. Period.

When I have been considering whether to buy a company and what price to offer, I have been blinded too often by reams of due diligence from the accountants and lawyers. Usually it pays to stand back from such mountains of grey data and weigh up the really important issues – and decide how you feel about the opportunity. It can be fatal to let small negative matters put you off an acquisition that you know in your heart is a wonderful deal. It might mean you spend your life dreaming about the brilliant chances you missed because you let overcautious advisers frighten you. Never allow quantitative drawbacks to defeat overwhelming qualitative arguments.

Jewelry In 2010 And Beyond

Check out IdexOnline's global report for jewelry in 2010 and beyond.

The U.S. economy is showing vitality, after significant weakness over the past year. Three key factors are having a positive impact on the U.S. economic recovery:
- The U.S. government and the Federal Reserve threw all of their defenses and stimuli at the recession early in the economic decline, long before other nations implemented recovery plans.
- The U.S. economy is far more resilient than most people understand. History confirms that U.S. recessions over the past 50 years are less frequent and not as volatile as in the prior periods since economists began tracking the economy in the late 1700s.
- The Federal Reserve has engineered the stimuli to put the U.S. economy back on track. If there is one thing to be learned from history, it is this: don’t bet against the Fed. The Fed may not be perfect, but overall its success record is enviable.

Everywhere you look, the quantity of information in the world is soaring. According to one estimate, mankind created 150 exabytes (billion gigabytes) of data in 2005. This year, it will create 1,200 exabytes. Merely keeping up with this flood, and storing the bits that might be useful, is difficult enough. Analysing it, to spot patterns and extract useful information, is harder still. Even so, the data deluge is already starting to transform business, government, science and everyday life. It has great potential for good—as long as consumers, companies and governments make the right choices about when to restrict the flow of data, and when to encourage it.

In the next five years, the mantra of providing the best...for the least is going to become ever-present. In other words, if you go into an extended-stay two-star hotel, you are going to get wireless, better thread-counts on your sheets and other things that five-star hotels typically had. And on a high-luxury end, people are also going to want more value for their dollar, and so it's up to the different hoteliers to figure out what that is going to be.

Random Thoughts

Dominance of De Beers and the other big companies is not going to change so quickly. What will continue to change, however, are the rough diamond marketing structures. We will probably see the end of the Diamond Trading Company within a few years. We will also most likely see that the governments of Botswana, Namibia and South Africa will control their own marketing mechanisms, just as the governments of Angola and Russia are doing today. Rough diamond marketing may ostensibly be in the hands of private companies, but it will definitely be more government-controlled.
