When I saw this stone, I knew it was a stone we had to have. I had the opportunity to examine and value it in my own offices, and I came to the conclusion it was one of the rarest stones I'd ever seen. The true rarity of the diamond, whatever its history, is the diamond itself. The history will continue. Every diamond that was ever mined, every diamond that was ever polished and cut, is still with us. Who knows the story that this stone will tell in a thousand years time. I'm sure it will gather very romantic stories, mysterious stories, intriguing stories, but at the end of the day the true beauty of the stone will remain. That will always be the best story.

The Canadian Diamond Code
Benefits: The Code establishes a minimum standard based on records and a chain of warranties required to validate a Canadian diamond claim. Retailers who abide by the Code demonstrate to consumers their commitment to ensure the authenticity of Canadian diamond claims. The Code allows Canadian diamonds to be traced from the Canadian mine to the diamond jewelry retailer, providing consumers with a method to authenticate Canadian diamonds sold by a Code member. The Code is endorsed by the Competition Bureau of Canada and the World Jewellery Confederation (CIBJO). Check it out.

Money isn’t automatically freedom. You need to look carefully at what you’re doing to earn the money before you can conclude that you are, in practice, free. This is a cost-benefit analysis we should all perform on our own lives. Don’t listen to what people say about freedom and security and money but, instead, look at the specific, actual bargains they are making with their lives. Dad’s example made me feel that, if I wanted to write for a living, I had an obligation to try and do it, and I’ve been writing full-time since 1996, when my first novel did well enough to let me quit my day job as an editor at the London Review of Books.

In the 21st century, it helps to be multi-skilled and multi-faceted in your occupation. We shall mostly have to keep earning until we are 70 or more, so traditional working patterns have become outdated. And anyway, who wants to do the same sort of thing for 50 years or longer? Better to try new fields, acquire new knowledge and keep stimulated, than slump into a semi-comatose state of boredom, stuck in the same position through fear of the unknown.

New Diamond Research
I thought the report in ScienceDaily about the strength of diamond at extreme conditions was educational/insightful. Thanks for sharing the info.
Most natural diamonds are formed at high-pressure, high-temperature conditions existing at depths of 87 to 120 miles in the Earth's mantle. Carbon-containing minerals provide the carbon source, and the growth occurs over periods from 1 billion to 3.3 billion years (25 percent to 75 percent of the age of the Earth).

Super Recognisers
Pam Rutherford's viewpoints in the BBC News about super recognisers was really interesting. Some people are truly amazing. I know a few super recognisers. I believe face recognition skill is a gift from the gods.
One of the most exciting implications of this work is that while we assume we all see the same things, this work suggests that at least in terms of looking at faces we don't see the same things. Super recognisers are looking at the world in a different way than other people and it could be that this isn't limited to looking at faces but other aspects of seeing the world. And we think it's going to be a very helpful tool in helping understanding of how the mind and the brain work.

Whatever it takes, that’s what it takes. Remember the anecdote about what the president of Rolex told the president of Timex? “You sell time. I sell prestige.” You can have clothes off the rack without fashion, but you can’t have fashion without style. That’s even more true of jewelry. Accessories can be mass-marketed. But an enduring token of true love – that’s jewelry. It’s an individual, custom-chosen, intimate gift – the quintessential expression of romance. That’s our trade. It’s the roots we must return to.

Chaim Even Zohar Viewpoint
Chaim was spot on. I think natural and synthetic diamonds will eventually become complementary products offered by most diamond dealers, including producers. Signs of the times I guess.

Art Market Update
Old Master sales are driven far more by supply than by demand. Artists who lived centuries ago are not going to produce any more work. Museums rarely sell their holdings and almost never let go of top-quality pieces. So the Old Master market is fed largely by private collectors. When markets are riding high, some can be persuaded to sell. But when times are rough, why not sit and wait? After all, Old Masters tend to be long-term holdings, handed down from generation to generation—what difference can it make to wait another year? Prices might go up.

It's such an untapped resource. Government data is something we have already spent the money on... and when it is sitting there on a disk in somebody's office it is wasted.

An entertainer might get a big part and say that it was a big break, but there were 25 auditions leading up to it. If he didn't get that big part, he would've been offered one soon. It's more of a story of accretive steps--what people do bit by bit that turns into a big picture, though at the time it looks like a big break.

A genuine revolution of values means in the final analysis that our loyalties must become ecumenical rather than sectional. Every nation must now develop an overriding loyalty to mankind as a whole in order to preserve the best in their individual societies.
