Hot Carbon: Carbon-14 And A Revolution In Science
Hot Carbon: Carbon-14 and a Revolution in Science by John Marra is a must read.
Random Thoughts
Shaun Tomson is a South African surfer who was the 1977 surfing world champion. Tomson absolutely ripped at Pipeline, giving Gerry Lopez and Rory Russell a run for their money. He is a very quiet, humble man who would charge the biggest, gnarliest waves and make it look easy. He helped make professional surfing a reality, whether that's a good thing or a bad thing is an exercise to the reader. Tomson assembled a code of collective wisdom to help surfers make it through the humdrum of life.
. I will never turn my back on the ocean.
. I will paddle around the impact zone.
. I will take the drop with commitment.
. I will never fight a rip tide.
. I will watch out for other surfers.
. There will always be another wave.
. I will always ride into shore.
. I will honor the sport of kings.
. I will pass along my stroke.
. I will catch a wave every day.
All surfers are connected by one ocean. Every one of Shaun's gems has a corollary that can be applied to life in general.
My Race Horse App
Horse racing is called the sport of kings for a reason. The high costs associated with buying, training and racing thoroughbreds limits the sport to a very select few who have both the will and financial means to take on those burdens. But a new, first-of-its-kind mobile app called MyRaceHorse is aiming to open horse ownership up to everyone with the time, money and a smartphone.
Lange 1 Daymatic 25th Anniversary
At the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie in Geneva in January, the revered German watchmaker A. Lange & Söhne introduced a special 25th anniversary collection comprising 10 models, each highlighting a milestone in the Lange 1 family of timepieces.
Last week, at Classic Days Schloss Dyck in Düsseldorf, Germany’s biggest classic car event, the brand unveiled the eighth model in the collection, the Lange 1 Daymatic “25th Anniversary,” whose 39.5 mm white gold case, argenté-colored, recessed dial and blued steel hands reinterpret the original Lange 1 Daymatic, introduced in 2010 (itself a self-winding mirror-image version of the very first Lange 1, a 1994 manual-wind timepiece that has spawned numerous iterations).

Dior's Hand-blown Glass Straws
Dior, the French fashion house introduced a £120 box (about $146 at current exchange) of six hand-blown glass straws designed to take the place of the plastic versions found in many restaurants and coffee shops. They’re also a lot more fun to look at than their stainless steel cousins, whose ubiquity among the environmentally conscious is growing. Half of Dior’s set is hand painted in metallic gold, and the other half features a spiral of the paint that extends for the length of the straws. Take a look.

Shame Plane
There is a direct link between air travel and the loss of Arctic sea ice. Alongside developer Dennis Mårtensson, Victor Müller has launched a website, Shame Plane, to help others understand the impact of our air travel.
Enter your departure city and your destination and the website gives you the carbon emissions of your flight, as well as how much Arctic ice it would melt. The site also compares the flight to individual actions that reduce emissions like using LED bulbs, going vegetarian, and giving up driving. Will you?

Embr Labs
Embr Labs is a startup founded by three MIT PhD students who were frustrated by the fact that their lab was always freezing cold during the summer, even when there were only a few people in the building.
Wouldn’t it make sense to provide cooling devices to each individual inside the lab instead of using insane amounts of energy to chill vast spaces? Their solution is a small, $299 device called the Embr Wave that you wear on the inside of your wrist. At the press of a button, a ceramic plate that sits next to your skin gets really cold, providing you a bit of relief by targeting the sensitive thermoreceptor nerves that sit on the inside of your wrist. The company claims that, because Embr would allow people to cool themselves rather than their entire office or home, it could translate to energy savings of between 15% and 35% of a building’s overall cooling costs. Take note.

Lucapa Recovers A 64 Carat Diamond At Mothae Mine In Lesotho
Development work at the Mothae mine in Lesotho has paid off for Lucapa Diamond Company, with the discovery of a 64-carat rough, the highest-quality diamond found at the deposit to date.
The miner recovered the D-color, type IIa stone at Mothae’s higher-margin southern pit, it said Tuesday. Lucapa began production in that area in the past month, following the construction of a dam enabling it to remove water. The company intends to continue processing from that portion of the site through the end of the year, it noted.
The recovery of this exceptional 64-carat gem represents a great start to mining campaign in the higher-margin zones in the southern pit at Mothae. The company began commercial production at Mothae at the end of 2018.
Many thanks to Rapaport.
Vladimir Grib Diamond
AGD Diamonds has unearthed three rough stones over 100 carats from its Grib mine in Russia, including one it claims is Europe’s largest.
The company found the 222.09-carat stone on May 4, and named it Vladimir Grib in honor of AGD’s former chief geologist.
The second stone, found on May 3, weighs 127.34 carats. The miner has called it Elisey Verichev, paying tribute to the AGD veteran who discovered the Lomonosov and Grib deposits. On July 18, the company discovered a 212.53-carat rough, which it named Lev Rovnin, after the former minister of geology of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, who oversaw the discovery and development of the diamond deposits at Arkhangelsk.
AGD, which operates the Grib mine, is owned by Otkritie Holding, a Russian company that purchased the business from Lukoil for $1.45 billion in 2017. While 5% of production remains in Russia for sale by the government, the remainder is exported to the group’s Grib Diamonds subsidiary in Antwerp.
All About That Case
The March / April 2019 issue of JCK included a story titled All About That Case in which a series of jewelry displays were beautifully and thoughtfully produced by prop stylist Beverley Hyde.
In it, the use of props—weathered wood and antique collectibles, organic elements like fresh flowers nestled in moss, or upended mushrooms paired with snow-white, rough-edged stones— added a storytelling element. Which, in turn, created a feeling of wonder and discovery, especially if customers were used to shopping for jewelry in more sterile environments.
Take a look at K Crook Design. Everything is a treasure. There are no rules.

How A Padron Is Made
Like many Cuban natives, the late Jose O. Padrón fled Cuba during the 1960s and settled in Miami. With just $600, he started his eponymous cigar company, hiring one employee who rolled cigars by day, which Padrón hawked at Miami’s many Cuban cafeterias at night. Equipped with memories of his family’s own Cuban tobacco farm, he knew what a great cigar should smell and taste like, and that was his benchmark. He began tinkering with tobacco from Brazil, Puerto Rico and elsewhere until he stumbled across habano leaf from Nicaragua, the closest in quality to what his family grew. From there, the business took off.

Decoding The Personalization Paradox
The USA's National Retail Federation and GfK (Growth from Knowledge) a digital research agency, have produced and published a white paper, entitled "Decoding the Personalization Paradox." The paper is to help retailers and brands apply "personalization at scale" and allows its users to learn more about consumers' needs, desires and concerns about targeting and personalization and how marketers can use this information to guide smarter decision-making as they ramp up one-to-one marketing.The report can be downloaded HERE from the NRF's website.
Among others, the report has found that:
90 percent of Americans report at least one major source of stress in their lives as suggesting a need for time-saving, personalized solutions;
50 percent of U.S. consumers report the brands they buy are an expression of themselves;
63 percent of Millennials like when a website keeps track of their activities and makes recommendations to them;
58 percent of all consumers are increasingly skeptical about trusting technology.
Insightful report.

The quest for new forms of money hasn’t gone away. In June of this year, Facebook unveiled Libra, global currency that draws on the architecture of Bitcoin. The idea is that the value of the new money is derived not from the imprimatur of any state but from a combination of mathematics, global connectedness, and the trust that resides in the world’s biggest social network. That’s the plan, anyway. How safe is it? How do we know what libras or bitcoins are worth, or whether they’re worth anything? Satoshi Nakamoto’s acolytes would immediately turn those questions around and ask, How do you know what the cash in your pocket is worth?
Watch Art Grand Exhibition
Patek Philippe has officially announced its fifth Watch Art Grand Exhibition will take place in Singapore from September 28th through October 13th. The last time the watchmaker held a Grand Exhibition was two years ago in New York City and the event has reached such a cult-like status among those who attended that people are still talking about it. Patek Philippe has also hosted exhibitions in London (2015), Munich (2013), and Dubai (2012). The Singapore edition, however, is not to be missed for serious Patek Philippe collectors and enthusiasts—this show will be the watchmaker’s largest exhibition yet.
Life At Home
Ikea has been on a mission to better understand people’s relationships with their homes by doing in-depth sociological studies of its consumers. The company publishes its finding in its annual Life at Home report, which began in 2014. Last year’s report involved visiting the houses and apartments of 22,000 people across 22 countries to better understand what everyday living looks like in today’s world.
What Ikea found was that our fundamental notions of home and family are experiencing a transformation. Plenty of demographic research suggests that major changes in where and how we live could be afoot: For instance, people who marry later may spend more years living with roommates. If couples delay having children—or choose to remain child-free—they may choose to live longer in smaller apartments. As people live longer, we might find more multigenerational homes, as parents, children, and grandchildren all cohabit under one roof.
Insightful report.
