We consider this an important step and enabling technology towards more practical optical systems based on this exciting material platform. Starting with these synthetic, nanostructured diamond samples, we can start dreaming about the diamond-based devices and systems that could one day lead to applications in quantum science and technology as well as in sensing and imaging.

Everest: The Death Zone
Everest: The Death Zone. This documentary captures the essence of a climb better than any other I have seen. For every six successful summits on Everest, one person will die. With more people climbing into the Death Zone, above 26,000 feet, one critical question is how oxygen deprivation affects the brain. I think this documentary holds some universal applications to life and business.

I found it remarkable that at a recent Barron’s roundtable discussion in New York where a number of prominent strategists and portfolio managers had gathered, India—the world’s second-most populous country, with more than a billion people and an economy that is growing at around 8% per annum—wasn’t mentioned once. In the year to March 2009, India added 125 million mobile phone subscribers! And whereas Indian auto sales are tiny compared to China’s vehicle sales (running currently at an annual rate of over 12 million units and up over 90% year on year), they are nevertheless up 39% year on year, with an annual rate of 1.6 million sales.
India’s middle class is estimated at 170 million (half the population of the US), and the country has one of the lowest vehicle-penetration rates in the world. Given that India also has one of the youngest populations—half of its 1.1 billion-plus people are less than 25 years old, compared to 42% in Brazil, 36% in China, and less than 30% in the developed nations—car sales will undoubtedly continue to soar in the next few years. In this respect, we should also take into account that India’s population will continue to grow rapidly and will exceed China’s population before 2030.

The rough diamond market is recovering and prices are close to where they were prior to the downturn; the diamond stocks haven't reflected this yet, trading relatively flat over the past six months. There was also no re-rating on the back of the better-than- expected Christmas numbers and the valuations still appear cheap. We think there is an opportunity here.

A: A social venture is one where the dominant goal of the venture is to have social impact (e.g. jobs, enhanced incomes, health, education) with profits (to ensure sustainability) being only the means of achieving this social impact. The entrepreneurship mindset determines the approach (e.g. scale, problem-solving) and culture (e.g. speed, efficiency, low cost, innovative) of this social venture. So when I buy a business, I am usually buying the manager with them, because I don’t know how to run the business. The idea that men buy the ring themselves and then get down on one knee and pop the question is a myth. We find most men are too practical to spend this sort of money on a whim. Souren Melikian's opinion piece in the New York Times about the auction week at Sotheby's was interesting.
Bidders were prepared to go for anything, as long as the artists had achieved a degree of prominence. It was the biggest shock in my life, when I realised how horrible, soulless and without feeling the five star lifestyle is. In those three weeks, we spent all the money you could possibly spend. But in all that time, we had the feeling we hadn't met a single real person – that we were all just actors. The staff played the role of being friendly and the guests played the role of being important and nobody was real.

Tainted Love
Diamonds mined illegally in conflict zones will always find their way onto the international markets because of its portability. According to Global Witness report, the continued existence of blood diamonds poses a serious problem for consumers looking to demonstrate their love with a diamond ring this Valentine’s Day, February 14, so do the right thing. Questions consumers can ask:
- Do you know where the diamonds you sell come from?
- Can I see a copy of your company’s policy on conflict diamonds?
- Can you show me a written guarantee from your suppliers that your diamonds are conflict-free?
- How is the supply chain audited?

Money is ready to flow as never before. Bakelite
Bakelite, the 20th century’s first plastic, is an amazing product. Most people associate Bakelite with jewelry, but today the material is used to create an array of 20th century objects—ash trays, toilet seats, door handles, blocks, bracelets, clocks, dinnerware, flashlights, toasters, kitchen mixers, and toy cars—to name a few. Check it out.

That’s the auction phenomenon. When wealthy people compete against each other they don’t want to lose.

Luke Johnson Viewpoint
Luke Johnson was spot on. Entrepreneurs build real companies that employ people and generate value for an economy. They do not amass riches through the misery of others; they create wealth and jobs, and make the capitalist system work.
We remember the winners but forget the hundreds of losers – they all appeared to be “sure things” at the time. That is why venture capital investing is hard to do well. Genuine innovation is a perilous game.

Retiring is like the end of the world, especially in this business. You need self-fulfilment. Why retire? An athlete retires at 35, 40 at the most; an actor doesn't have to retire till he's 80 or whatever. A lot of people, when they retire, it's over, they're gone – men quicker than women.

Global Coffee BBC
The BBC World Service/ABC Radio National programme on Vietnam’s meteoric rise in the global coffee business was interesting and insightful. I didn't know that Vietnam’s coffee farmers were responsible for a quarter of all the instant coffee drunk around the world. Many thanks.

Gomp/Arts BBC
What makes an artwork worth £65m? I have been asking the same question since the life-size bronze sculpture by Alberto Giacometti was sold at auction in the UK for the world-record price of £65,001,250. I guess, at the end of the day, art is obviously in the eye of the beholder, and people who can afford to do so can spend their money as they please. But Melanie Clore's, (Deputy Chairman, Sothebys) answer (condition, rarity, reputation of the artist, competition, and confidence) was also interesting. Art business is a peculiar business, but it's a business. Many thank to Will Gompertz for sharing your thoughts.

People are bored with Impressionists and want to see new things. Most of the pop culture of the young Westerners is rooted outside of Western culture. Bjork, for example, will talk about African, Inuit, Arabic music, not about Mozart or the Rolling Stones. The interest of the young generation is in manga, African textiles, Polynesian tattooing, Japanese food.

Chaim Even Zohar Viewpoint
I think Chaim Even Zohar has a valid point here. The WDC isn’t perfect. The Kimberley Process (KP) has major flaws. Martin Rapaport should have been more considerate. I think the Zimbabwe situation is a serious matter. I hope the industry will come up with a meaningful and effective solution.
