The Van Eeghen Drawing Book At The Rijksmuseum

Recently donated to the Rijksmuseum by the Van Eeghen family, who kept it intact for over three centuries, the Van Eeghen Drawing Book (Het Van Eeghen Tekenboek) is a rare, perfectly preserved early 17th-century volume on display in Room 2.7 from 19 August to 29 November 2026. The artifact contains roughly 30 dramatic, colorful Biblical scenes created between 1600 and 1635 by Rombout Uylenburgh—a nearly forgotten master and former Polish court painter who is connected to Rembrandt van Rijn through his art-dealer brother Hendrick and cousin Saskia. Given that only two of Uylenburgh's drawings were previously known to exist, the discovery and donation of this volume, honored in memory of C.P. van Eeghen, marks a major historical revelation for Dutch art history.
