Random Thoughts

They are young and old, rich and poor, some with education, others armed only with a laptop or a library card. But they all have one thing in common: They are ordinary people who believe they are actually troves of knowledge. [They are] convinced they are more informed than the experts, more broadly knowledgeable than the professors, and more insightful than the gullible masses. Interestingly, intellectual humility has become a hot topic in the field of personality psychology. In recent years, a spate of studies have emerged that highlight the important role it plays in our knowledgerelationships and worldview. So what happens when everyone thinks they’re smarter than everyone else? Over to you.

The End Of Forgetting

Imagine you interviewed for your dream job. It went well, you made the final cut, and an official offer was imminent. But then, at the last minute, it falls apart. It turns out your soon-to-be manager glanced at your Facebook account, noticed some awkward photos from your college years, and decided you weren’t quite right for the position. This is the kind of scenario Kate Eichhorn, a cultural and media studies professor at the New School, warns about in her new book called The End of Forgetting. In this new digital world, she argues, everything is documented, everything is tagged, and anything can surface at any moment. We’re losing the ability to forget, and therefore we’re losing the ability to distance ourselves from our past. Take note.

Lab-grown Diamond Market

Lab-grown diamonds are having a moment—and the market is taking notice. As consumers grow more and more concerned about the environmental and moral cost of the goods they buy, synthetic diamonds have become an increasingly popular alternative to traditionally mined stones, according to Earther. The numbers are bearing this out in big way: Recent studies reveal that the market for lab-grown diamonds increased from 1 percent of the $14 billion rough diamond market in 2016 to an estimated 2 to 3 percent today. That’s good for a whopping $280 million to $420 million in sales. There will be more news in the coming months.
