Random Thoughts

Likability seems to have emerged as an important personality trait in the late 19th century, when it became closely associated with male business success. Before this, people liked or disliked one another, of course, but it wasn’t until after the Civil War, when middle-class men began to see virtue and character as essential to personal advancement, that success in business required projecting likability.

Machiavellianism Test

Over five centuries since Niccolò Machiavelli was born, his vision of a ruthless, manipulative leader is as relevant as ever. Born on May 3, 1469, the 16th-century Florentine statesman and political philosopher is best known for his 1513 work The Prince, in which he argued that new princes shouldn’t be afraid of being ruthless in order to achieve their aims. In the centuries following his death, Machiavelli’s name became synonymous with the ideas outlined in The Prince, and by the mid-20th century psychologists had used his enduring theories as the basis for a test named after him. You can take the Machiavellianism test here.

Ivory Hanko

The best ivory for carving a hanko, or a personal seal, comes from the center of the tusk. That is where the ivory is firm and flawless. Japan is home to the world’s largest legal market in ivory, driven by demand for hankos: the small stamps Japanese use in place of signatures for anything from opening a bank account to signing an employment contract. But pressure is mounting from both outside and inside Japan to close down a market that activists say contributes to illegal elephant hunting. Will the Japanese comply? We shall wait and see.

Which Face Is Real?

Jevin West and his colleague, Carl Bergstrom, a professor in theoretical and evolutionary biology who also teaches at the UW’s I-School, posted something even more unsettling: a side-by-side test of a photographically captured face and a generated one at whichfaceisreal.com. The world's wealthy are increasingly on the move. About 108,000 millionaires migrated across borders last year, a 14 percent increase from the prior year, and more than double the level in 2013, according to Johannesburg-based New World Wealth. Australia, U.S. and Canada are the top destinations, according to the research firm, while China and Russia are the biggest losers. The U.K. saw around 3,000 millionaires depart last year with Brexit and taxation cited as possible reasons. There will be more millionaires contemplating to move for obvious reasons.
