Digital Renaissance For Earth's Treasures

In a significant move for the scientific community, academic publisher Wiley has partnered with the American Museum of Natural History to digitize its massive collection of over 120,000 mineral specimens and 5,000 gemstones. This collaboration aims to transform physical artifacts into a comprehensive spectral library, providing a high-tech foundation for mineral identification across diverse disciplines like geology, forensics, and materials science. By integrating this data into the KnowItAll software and SpectraBase online platform starting this spring, the initiative will empower researchers and industry professionals with the reference materials needed to develop advanced algorithms and analyze novel materials, ensuring these world-class specimens are accessible to the global scientific community.
