The Spatial Philosophy Of Lee Ufan

Born in Korea in 1936, internationally acclaimed artist Lee Ufan was a central figure in both Japan's avant-garde Mono-ha movement and Korea's Dansaekhwa monochrome painting movement. His practice revolves around the "art of the encounter," emphasizing the subtle dynamic between raw materials—such as uncarved stones and raw steel plates—and the environment and the viewer around them. Rather than imposing form, Ufan arranges minimalist elements to illuminate the relationship between presence, space, and perception.
