Researchers have found two unusual diamonds side-by-side at the former Voorspoed mine in South Africa. The diamonds contain inclusions that show they formed in completely different chemical conditions, which scientists once thought was impossible. The study, led by Hebrew University experts and published in Nature Geoscience, reveals new details about how diamonds form deep inside the Earth and gives fresh insight into the planet's mantle chemistry.
