How Ending Mining Would Change The World

I believe in a world of no mining, ghost towns would be created almost overnight. Mining is not going anywhere anytime soon. If you can't grow it, you have to mine it, goes the miner's credo. Many thanks to BBC Future Planet for the insightful story.

The Living Bridges Of India

Visit the indigenous groups in north-east India. As well as being regenerative form of architecture, living root bridges grow stronger with time, self-repairing and become more robust as they age. When it rains heavily, small cement bridges wash away and steel bridges tend to rust, but living root bridges withstand the rains. Root bridges are much durable than modern alternatives, and they cost absolutely nothing. Kerala (the state where I live) should learn from the indigenous groups in north-east India. These bridges are brilliant examples of not just sustainable development, which minimizes the damage and degradation of natural systems, but of regenerative development.

Ceiba

Ceiba is the first vessel built by Sail Cargo, a company trying to prove that zero-carbon shipping is possible, and commercially viable. Made largely of timber, Ceiba combines both very old and very new technology: sailing masts stand alongside solar panels, a uniquely designed electric engine and batteries. Once on the water, the vessel will be capable of crossing oceans entirely without the use of fossil fuels. Hats off to Danielle Doggett and the team.

Growing Nickel From Trees

No other country has a greater potential for phytomining than Indonesia. Given the extraordinary plant diversity and geological history, Indonesia has a huge potential for the discovery of nickel hyper-accumulators. Experts believe many potential hyper-accumulators are vanishing in rapid land clearances before they can be discovered. Phytomining should become a part of every mining zone, with firms required to reserve a portion of rainforests in their concession area. Using plants rather than heavy machinery to mine will create less waste, preserve the ecosystem and produce less toxic waste.

Are We Witnessing The Death Of The Car?

Not really. Policy and behaviour change may take a long time, but there exists a building momentum across the world that recognises car-free streets as a critical way of tackling the urgent crisis, as well as a strategy to improve health and well-being.
