No other country has a greater potential for phytomining than Indonesia. Given the extraordinary plant diversity and geological history, Indonesia has a huge potential for the discovery of nickel hyper-accumulators. Experts believe many potential hyper-accumulators are vanishing in rapid land clearances before they can be discovered. Phytomining should become a part of every mining zone, with firms required to reserve a portion of rainforests in their concession area. Using plants rather than heavy machinery to mine will create less waste, preserve the ecosystem and produce less toxic waste.
