Lucapa Recovers A 64 Carat Diamond At Mothae Mine In Lesotho

Development work at the Mothae mine in Lesotho has paid off for Lucapa Diamond Company, with the discovery of a 64-carat rough, the highest-quality diamond found at the deposit to date.

The miner recovered the D-color, type IIa stone at Mothae’s higher-margin southern pit, it said Tuesday. Lucapa began production in that area in the past month, following the construction of a dam enabling it to remove water. The company intends to continue processing from that portion of the site through the end of the year, it noted.

The recovery of this exceptional 64-carat gem represents a great start to mining campaign in the higher-margin zones in the southern pit at Mothae. The company began commercial production at Mothae at the end of 2018.

Many thanks to Rapaport.
