A Rough Cut Trade

The informal nature of the colored gemstone trade, combined with the inherent difficulty in valuing rough stones at the site of extraction, provides ample opportunity for criminal and corrupt actors to exploit and profit it. Sadly there is no easy solution.

Singapore Emerald Auction

Gemfields raised $27.2 million at its November sale of emerald, capping off the miner's second highest annual results in 10 years. The miner sold 320000 carats of rough emeralds at an average price of $85 per carat, the highest at any Gemfields emerald auction. Some 87% of lots found buyers.
